Soul Coal is an innovative new enterprise that creates eco friendly charcoal from sustainable and
renewable raw materials. We put environmental protection and community development at the
heart of our business to ensure we only create high quality, environmentally friendly products. Our
unique approach guarantees the effective and sustainable use of natural resources and protects the
environment

HOW WE WORK

WHAT WOOD DO WE HARVEST

All our charcoal is made from Leleshwa trees, an abundant native East African species which rapidly
regenerates. Making our charcoal from leleshwa preserves the environment and provides our
customers with alternatives to illegal charcoal products the production of which causes
unsustainable deforestation. In addition to this, charcoal created from Leleshwa has a high calorific
value, lights fast and burns clean and strong.

WHERE WE HARVEST

We only harvest the wood for our charcoal from the Laikipia Nature Conservancy the largest
conservancy of its kind in Kenya. Laikipia Nature Conservancy is a protected biodiversity area with
a pristine environment and an abundance of wildlife and birdlife. With our partners at the
conservancy we have developed a unique way to create charcoal that actually serves to benefit the
environment and protect wildlife. The profits from Soul Coal go directly towards wildlife
conservation and community empowerment through the Laikipia nature conservancy

WHY WE HARVEST

We don’t just harvest Leleshwa trees to make charcoal, we harvest leleshwa trees to create
firebreaks that help prevent dangerous bush fires. Uncontrolled bush fires can severely damage the
natural habitat of the hundreds of species that live in the Laikipia Nature Conservancy. By
strategically harvesting leleshwa trees we give space for other tree species and wildlife to flourish
making Soul Coal the only charcoal that creates fires while preventing them

HOW WE MAKE OUR CHARCOAL

We use super efficient retort kilns to make our charcoal, These Kilns ensure that 100% of the wood
is carbonized. We are able to produce three times more charcoal per ton of wood when compared
to illegally harvested charcoal produced in earth kilns. Therefore, by buying our charcoal you are
saving three times the amount of trees and reducing the quantity and frequency of wood
harvesting. Retort kilns, through the carbonization process, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and
incinerate all volatiles and methane gas, which is one of the most significant contributors to
climate change.
